Benjamin Watson | Published on 2/18/2021

The Love Brothers, Julius Henderson (born 1885) William Albert (born 1888), Edgar Amos (born 1891) and John Wesley (born 1894) were all born to the Rev. Julius C. Love, a widely respected minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church and Susie Love (Carr), the first woman to graduate from Morgan College (now Morgan State University). All of them attended prep school at Morgan College prior to enrolling in Howard University.

The Love Brothers left a lasting mark on Howard's campus starting with the oldest, William Albert graduating with his bachelors in 1910 and receiving his M.D. from Howard's medical school in 1914. While in medical school he was on the charter line of a Alpha Chapter which was chartered December 15, 1911. Upon graduation, William moved to Kansas City, Missouri and established a successful medical practice in addition to helping organize Beta Omega graduate chapter in 1922.

Like his brother William, Julius Henderson was also on the charter line of Alpha Chapter in December 1911. Julius received his A.B. degree in 1910 and his LL.B (law degree) in 1912 both from Howard University. Julius was initiated into the fraternity while still in law school. Shortly after receiving his law degree, Julius would move to Montgomery, West Virginia and establish a successful private law practice until his death in 1956.

Edgar Amos was the second youngest of the four Love brothers. His story is widely know as a campus leader and founder of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., served our country in WWI as Army Chaplain and longtime Bishop in the Methodist Church until his passing in 1974.

The youngest, John Wesley Love also followed in the  footsteps of his three older brothers. He is the only Love brother to gain membership into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity through a pledge process where he was initiated into the Fraternity through Alpha Chapter in 1913. While at Howard, John served as President of the prestigious Kappa Sigma Debating Club.  Addition he was an avid track star competing on the University team in events ranging from the 100 yard dash to 5 mile run. John graduated in 1916. After serving in WWI achieving the rank of First Lieutenant, John went to Howard's law school and received his law degree in 1922. Two of his classmates were Bros. Campbell C. Johnson (18th Grand Basileus, 7th Grand KRS and 4th Editor to the Oracle) and Walter H. Mazyck (8th Grand KRS).  They were also his Line Brothers.  So close were the three that after graduation they established a law practice together in D.C. for several years.  Eventually, he moved to Charleston, West Virginia where his Brother, Julius had established a law practice years before. John, like his older brothers, was extremely active in the fraternity serving as Vice Grand Basileus in 1922.  On January 5, 1924, Bro. John was elected as our Fraternity's 10th Grand Basileus. John died suddenly of a heart attack on January 5, 1951 at the young age of 56 in Charleston.
